Maybe we need to Do it Ourselves!
Roy July 4th, 2009
There is rampant illegality within the Taxi trade.
- The public don’t give a toss
- The Gardai don’t gve a toss
- The Regulator/enforcers don’t give a toss.
The general public just want to go home and will get into what seems to be a legitimate Taxi, assuming that the Gardai/Enforcers are looking after their welfare.
The Gardai are only interested in keeping the Streets clear, moving on or ticketing those Taxis that are illegally parked, it seems that checking if the Taxi is legal isn’t a requirement for them.
The Enforcers show up for an hour every couple of months…… then go away again.
Is it now down to us (Taxi Drivers) to police ourselves? As we’re the only ones who actually seem to care about this situation!
Maybe we should arrange to meet in groups of three, at irregular times, and then walk from Taxi to Taxi on the ranks, both the legal and illegal ones, checking for the details that should be visible from outside the Taxi.
There is no need for confrontation. Tell legitimate drivers what we are doing and to keep an eye. just in case other drivers get shirty.
Possible Checklist:
Plate Number…….Correct side of roofsign yes/no
County that the driver is licenced for ….Visible/is this County yes/no
Picture/name of driver …..visible yes/no
Daisy front ……in date / not forged yes/no
Daisy rear….in date/ not forged yes/no
If any of the above have a No answer, then tell the driver that all three of you are reporting him to the Regulator and ask for his name and spsv number, if he doesn’t give it… write that he refused.
Then follow up with the regulator that some action is taken to ensure the driver is legitimate and will in future abide by the same rules as the rest of us.
Maybe then a culture of not allowing drivers that don’t display the required information to work alongside us will prevail……. instead of the current apathy!
There are inherent dangers with taking on something like this, the people involved should be able to use a little diplomacy, must not get involved in slagging matches or engage in any physical contact.
Just inform the drivers that that you are a concerned Taxi driver, simply trying to ensure a safe, reliable, quality assured service.
Or is there some law saying we cannot?

I’ll row in with you, tell the offenders i’m photographing as evidence for the TR for the above offences, and also at the bottom of Grafton street where they steal legitimate drivers customers, and like james i dont take shit.
Two thoughts:
And that bogies will rank up on legit ranks instead of…Grafton St, Baggot St, outside the pubs etc etc.
1. You’re assuming that the 27,000 taxis in Ireland can get on a rank
2. To be honest, I don’t know how I’d react if 3 guys came up to me, rapped on the window and starting asking questions. Taxis are in a public place so I guess you could do most of your checks without talking to the driver.
I’m almost legit. Shame on me – I don’t have a torch in the boot! What would you do with me?
Watdub, it’s the guillotine for you me oul son , and afterwards you can lodge an appeal !!
I do give a toss, but I’m damn sure not going to start peering in trying to spot the county/daisy/whatever – it’s not easy to do from the side of the road you know. Bigger ID cards for the blind amongst us! Or even the not so blind, so it’s easy to check at a glance if the dude looks legit. The cards are too hard to read.
look im as fustrated as the rest of ye here….but thats the gardas job and im sure if it was abogie driver he would leggit after the first question…or stick a screwdriver in one of us…in dublin anyway
