Let’s try for one little victory!
Roy July 15th, 2009
For years now the Taxi industry in Ireland has been battered. with one regulation after another.
We have so many complaints now we don’t seem to know were to begin:
- Not enough ranks
- Too many Taxis
- Too much illegality
- Not enough enforcement
- Drivers not properly trained
and so on, ad infinatum.
So I thought this site would pick one issue to pound the regulator with, constantly! Until such time as a solution is found, I’m not saying I won’t highlight other issues as they arise, just that this one will be the sites hobbyhorse!
THE COUNTY FOR WHICH THE DRIVER IS LICENCED SHOULD BE CLEARLY VISIBLE TO ALL, THE CURRENT SYSTEM, WITH IT PRINTED ON THE BACK OF THE ID CARD – IS INADEQUATE!
Customers:
You must be fed up with drivers not knowing were they are going and concerned that drivers plying for hire outside the area for which they are licenced are not insured for the journey taken.
Drivers:
You must be fed up getting complaints about drivers who have no idea where they are never mind where they are going and annoyed with your livelihood being shared with unlicenced drivers.
HERE IS WHAT TO DO!
Please put your Name into the FORM provided HERE and press – SUBMIT, That’s it ……it’s that simple!” the complaint will be automatically sent to the regulator. you may i change the wording of the complaint to suit your needs if you wish.

1The question of rank space does not fall within my remit you will need to take up that issue withthe relevant council.
2I was recently in Killinascully and went into Jacksies bar and asked could they order me a taxi there are no taxi cabs available in the area so undoubtadbly there is in reality a shortage of taxies so although you could be run over in your bed by a taxi in Dublin a moritorium on the issue of plates cannot be implemented as the lisence system is a national one and Killinascully would be victimised by such a ban
3My enforcement staff have not caught many illegals so factually they do not exist.
4As there does not seem to be a problem with illegals see answer to previous question the numberof enforcement officers would seem perfectly sufficient.
5If you feel your skills and training are not sufficient for the task of driving although you hold a perfectly legal driving lisence it would seem to me that you have an inferiority complex and may wish to readress your ying and yang balance try reading yoga or meditation .
Ihope Ihave helped you to understand some of the issues that seem to concern you and now that I have put your mind at rest you will enjoy your career work harder and prosper.

knowledge test + garda screening… it’s all i want as a customer. I don’t care about the county thing really, it doesn’t mean they won’t know where they are going.
laineyg, It amazes me what people think is the minimum they should expect from a service industry like taxi’s and perhaps you are right, that people who see this industry as a business are dinosaurs and should just get out now.
To me the knowledge test needs to be a practical one, we can all “form” learn, but what happens when we have to find alternatives to the learned route.
A practical test would also double as a driving test, there are differences to driving a car for hire and driving a private car and the situations and practicalities of driving a taxi should be tested.
Again you highlight the issue that I feel is the major obstacle to this industry, “the customer does not care once there’s a taxi available” and the reason de-regulation cannot work in the taxi industry. There is NO commercial reward for excellence of service as would happen in most other markets, therefore the industry must be regulated and the standards adhering to the industry set at the highest level both for entry and operation. Which leads to the next problem, standards require a level of income that allows the maintenance of these standards, the point are which this occurs has long past and a major overhaul of the industry is required to fix this.
@Lainey, if you cannot see the County……how do you know they’ve done the knowledge test?
Day 1 – 32 emails sent via the form
I’ve sent mine Roy, lets hope lots more do too.
Roy I can’t see it anyway even if you put it on the front of the stupid ID card, on the back, on every side. Unless you stick it in big letters on the roof sign, I can’t see it. The ID card is pointless as illegible until in vehicle, it’s too late then – I’m not going to get out again. Actually on the passenger window might do?
@Swords Driver I’d love to expect more – the basics of safety cannot be guaranteed, I’m not going to concern myself with the niceties of a newish clean car until they are!
Have had such strange drivers lately! And seen such horrific driving on Wexford St – how there hasn’t been a major incident there yet is beyond me, it really seems to be the worst spot in town post midnight
Done..Also added that the colours fade because they are not lightfast.
@Lainey…that’s the point of the complaint!

Roy… none of the info is visible, the whole ID card is illegeible. If the complaint was to change the STYLE of the ID card, or to put the identifying info somewhere else, maybe. The way you’ve written it it seems you want to put the county on the *front* of the existing ID card rather than the back… perhaps I misunderstand.
@Lainey, I want them (the commission) to come up with a better system, that’s what they’re paid for,
you can change the wording on the form to suit your ideas and submit it
Answer I received from No 35 today
Dear Sir / Madam Thank you for your contact below with the Commission. You might wish to note that the matters raised in your email below are currently being considered by the Commission as part of its recent public consultation process on the recommendations arising from the Economic Review of the SPSV sector. The Commission has developed a number of proposed reforms and initiatives which it presented to the Advisory Council on the 16th July last. The Commission will consider any subsequent advice it receives from the Council and will be making its final recommendations known to the industry in the early autumn.
Kind regards
