Payment for Incomplete Journeys

taxi breakdown

I picked up a fare on Saturday evening on Mount Street, turned out he had been in the Taxi that was now parked up outside Holles Street Hospital……. but it had broken down.

The passenger, who seemed knowledgeable enough on the topic, diagnosed the fault as a broken timing belt and reckoned the ’98 registered Primera was probably heading for the scrapheap.

What surprised me however, was that the  passenger was charged the €8 odd on the meter for the trip from O’Connell Street to Mount Street, on the few occasions were I’ve had car trouble with passengers on board, I’ve always asked them to wait in the cab while I hail another Taxi and have never dared to charge them for the part journey.

I don’t believe there is an actual protocol for dealing with customers in the case of a breakdown so I guess it’s each to his own on this one.

@Roy. I would follow the sme course of action as you (and have done) but legally the driver is entitled to the fare.

@Brenny. I guess there was someone called Doyle in DoE in 2000?

Yes, legally the driver is entitled to the fare. But in all fairness, the cost of running a taxi vs our ridicoulsy low income is not the fault of our passengers. We are being squeezed like lemons but if we take it out on the public we are barking up the wrong tree.
Recently, I collided with a car that moved into an active bus lane. T.G. we were not speeding. Nobody was injured and the damage was light. Waiting for the Gardai my fare (who gave me her details as my witness) was anxious to be on her way. We were only 5 minutes from her destination. She offered to pay but I declined. I flagged down a taxi and paid the driver. I am no saint, but I think it is important that we keep up our PR with our customers. I am not so concerned with the week-end drunks but I do want to make sure not to alieniate our customers.
