I’ll spend the rest of my life paying off the debt I incurred trying to be a taxi driver, while others in their hundreds were given free access to the industry.
All of this is too late for me, and I do not see why those individuals responsible for the corruption in the first place, should now be given plaudits for sorting it out.
They should be given one way taxi rides to Siberia.
The taxi business in Ireland:
A “dumping ground” for Nigerians,the great unemployed masses foolish enough to leave their secure welfare payments ,and of course a hobby for retired Gardai & prison officers with 1000 Euro a week pensions!.(and your taxes,fuel bills etc. are paying for their pensions!)
@tirnanog33.
Full time taxi drivers may qualify for various social welfare payments such as BTWEA or Job Seekers Allowance, the latter subject to means test.
One of the many budgets delivered in 2009 altered the pension contributions of public servants through the introduction of levies.
A week before xmas and in among the cards was a bill from my accountant telling me that i owed him 300 euro’s for the work he done on my tax returns, he probably thought with the extra money that i was earning over the xmas period that i would have sent him a cheque for same by return post, I worked out by breaking down my costs fuel, Ins, motor tax NCT etc that i would have to work 4.5 nights to pay him, he is I’m afraid and ashamed to say ‘going to have to sing a little louder’. Then I thought to myself why cant someone come up with the inishitive that full time taxi drivers must pay a fixed return each year irrespective of their circumstances that way we could put a little away each week or even set up a direct debit each month to the tax man, this would cut out the added expense each year to the accountant who could’nt give a shit whether your xmas was merry, white, black or red.
@chester. That there can’t be done. You can, of course, do your own tax returns though.
Stephen, full time drivers (that is old,original, pre celtic tiger,white caucasian, drivers) qualify for F**k all except long hours grief and hardship.
Most of them who still exist, have their wives out supporting them, and are unable to throw themselves on the mercy of their local community welfare officer for a means tested handout.!
@tirnanog33. That is incorrect. One of the more educated contributors to the Forum, Nighthawk, discovered that drivers are entitled to Job Seekers Allowance subject to means testing. As regards the urban myth that only the darkies avail of the services of the community welfare officer, I’d suggest that you visit your local health centre when the CWO is holding court, you’ll find that the game of relieve-i-o which has been part of working class culture in this wonderful Country, long before the arrival of our West African colleagues, is alive and well.
