During our recent inclement spell the following thoughts occurred to Swords Driver (A contributer to the Blog/Forum) -
1. Street parking where off street parking is provided, as in most estates should render the owner liable for any accidents caused by a car slipping or sliding on ice and hitting the parked vehicle.
2. Pedestrians should become liable for accidents caused by their reckless behaviour.
3. Accidents caused by speed bumps causing a vehicle to loose traction should render the local authority liable.
4. Bad weather speed restrictions need to be legislated.
5. L drivers should be barred from the roads during such times.
6. PSV (Taxi Driver) applicants should have to do a practical driving test to show that they can actually drive.
7. Any Taxi Driver caught charging “danger” money should lose their licence.

All so obvious, no wonder our wondrous and glorious government never even thought of it.
That bunch of bungling incompetents never thought of adjusting the traffic light sequences, either to suit conditions.
So in snow and ice, when it takes a long time to get moving from the lights, they still gave the same period of amber. Result: Virtually no car could clear a junction before the crossing traffic got the green.
Bring those twits to Poland, Scandinavia or better: Siberia to teach them how traffic should be managed in a severe winter.
Noel Dempsey, that is where we think you should have been: on a fact finding junket to Siberia instead of a holiday in Malta.
And when you’re at it: Book with Never Come Back Airlines. If you do, the people will forgive you if you book first class.
The Swords driver should come into the city center (no pun intended) to witness for himself through hail, rain, sleet or shine the experianced manouvres of some taxi drivers, why only last night i seen a taxi travel across three lanes of traffic on D’Olier St to get to some bloke that only reached up to scratch his head, then later in the morning as i travelled down Dawson St a couple walked out from nowhere and three taxi’s that where in front of me pulled in to see if there was a possible fare and i have to admit i was the forth car to pull over hoping that the cars in front of me where, well not e’rm air conditioned?’ but the couple crossed the road and got into there own car. there is no shame or embaressment in this job any more and there is certaintly no pride because we are the scraps and crumbs of a table that no wheelie bin has a tag for. when it becomes a case that when you see a couple at the side of the road kissing you know that they are going to part company and each will want a taxi and no matter what you say or think if a cab has pulled in before you, as sure as sh”te stinks you will pull in behind him and for 3 euro an hour ‘well why not’.
Perhaps snow chains should be compulsory on SPSVs in such conditions.
@Flybynite
Well they screwed the civil and public servants from the bottom up, so they could hardly expect the “plebs” in the lower echelons to give a toss while on their Christmas holidays and they were the folks we needed to adapt things to suit the weather.
@Chester
Its no different in the “burbs”, we even have students/taxi drivers going into pubs asking if anyone wants a taxi while others actively tout for customers on the streets.
@Stephan
Are they legal, given that they can damage the road surface ?. How do they preform on ice and would spikes not be better on ice and would they be legal ?.
whats danger money????????
@SD. I’m not sure about the legality of any such products. Snow chains, in the absence of snow, will damage both the road surface and the tyres. I don’t think we experience such conditions frequently enough to justify investing too much anyway. I suspect that withdrawal of service (in line with decisions of other road transport providers) is the only viable solution.
@ric 39. Danger Money is the second album by the group U.K., featuring John Wetton, Eddie Jobson and Terry Bozzio. It was released by E.G. Records / Polydor in March 1979. Tracks 3, 4 and 6 had been performed on tour throughout 1978 (and an early version of 6 included what became the intro to the title track) by the band’s original line-up with Bill Bruford and Allan Holdsworth. From the session of the album, a new version of “In The Dead Of Night” was recorded, and was released as a B-side of singles taken from the album. This “new” version has yet to appear on any CD release.
tanks stephen thats clears that up

Ref Taxi Driver Case In Limerick?
As i find your comments are always will thaught out i would like your view on the judge who went against the Limerick Chief Superintendent and granted back his licance even though the Chief Superintendent had advised against it. I beleive that any person on that type of charge should have their licence removed, and if found not guilty should have his costs paid by the person, and if they were unable to pay the state would be obliged, any person who the Chief Superintendent feels has a case to answer should not have been allowed drive an member of the public as for all we know he may have commited other crimes that have gone unreported. I feel for the Woman & her family.
