I think we all agree that it is not a bad idea to stop or reduce excessive speeding. We all know what it means. But we still are uncertain as what the government considers to be “speeding”.
    Common sense:
Speeding is driving faster than circumstances allow. And circumstances can change with time of the day, light conditions, traffic, rain, snow, ice, condition of the vehicle etc. on the same road.
    Government:
Speeding is driving faster than a posted limit, regardless of whether conditions would in relative safety allow a higher margin.
The speed limits are often arbitrary and may make no sense. E.g. a maximum of 80 kph on country boreens where 60 is already too fast or 100 kph which I often encountered on narrow local washboard roads in the West of the country. When driving over 60 kph at some of these roads I had to be careful and make sure that my load was securely tied down or it would hit the ceiling of the trailer or end up on the road !
On the other hand, the M50, a six-lane motorway between the M1 and N3 also has a fixed 100 kph limit. The same as the N3 near Blanch which can be very busy and is not a motorway.
So are these new speed vans going to put emphasis on SAFETY or on issuing fines for anyone driving a little bit faster that the posted limit ? The government says “safety” but we know they are a bunch of gombeens and shysters who will not tell the truth if a lie will do !
And I resent the idea of the law being upheld by a commercial entity. Probably British !
I think we are going in the wrong direction if we take elements of law enforcement away from an Garda Siochana. What will it be next ? Vigilantes with a government-issued badge ?
