Non Transferability, the biggest fudge yet!

Roy November 21st, 2012

We were told there would be no transfer of taxi plates from October 2012, the only date set by the minister in his review.
This was then subsequently changed to the new year (January)
Now we must await the passing of a bill through the Dail and Senate, ……..the 12th of never?

    This calls for a quango !
    Just like the driver CPC. I have done two so far and am booked in for two more. At a cost of about 50 quid a go. I must catch up or I won’t be allowed to drive a coach or truck. I have been lucky because when I started one driving test covered both buses and rigids. They are of similar size and handle about the same but the boffins now decided that a separate test is required. Read: squeeze more money out of the driving fraternity.
    The CPC is another money racket.
    This must be done every year, there are 6 modules. 6 and 7 are for truck and bus drivers respectively.
    There is no test, one pays and sits in for a whole wasted day so that the RSA can be informed.
    This came in force about 4 years ago, I filled in for a mate driving a truck two years ago. Later I did some free-lance coach driving. Had I been driving trucks or buses 4 years ago I would have done one a year, but now I am two years behind and must cough up 100 quid if I want to drive larger vehicles again. And frankly, I am going to apply for work in the coach bsuiness again because I am sick and tired of the constant rat race, back biting, hassle from Gardai and eejits in offices.
    Besides, even though driving a coach is not exactly well paid either (some companies pay no more than 90 a day), at least one has protection from excessive hours. There is no pressure to race back into town from the suburbs late at night, no investing a large sum of money, no worries if the bus breaks down. And at the end of the week there is the pay packet. No surprises.
    And if the tour guide is any good, there may be an envelope from the grateful tourists and some kick-back from sales, shows etc.
    A few operators have a fixed amount that their tourists should give to driver and guide.
    So with a bit of luck I may be off the rank again come 2013 !
    As a parting shot: what I fear is that eventually the eejits in their offices will decide that taxi drivers will have to do a CPC (and a separate one for taxis, no such thing as one for all drivers, mark my words) and install tachos in their vehicles. And that may not even be such a bad thing !

    @Roy:
    I think some Regulations which have “fundamental effect” on people’s livelihood, if it has to changed, may need to be backed-up with Legislation otherwise, peeps will rush to court to declare it invalid.

    Thus, the need to pass Legislation first before trying to enforce such Regulations.

    The problem was that they went to town first (propaganda effect!), before doing the “homework”.
