No Transfer!

Roy January 31st, 2013

Will someone please explain to the idiot rep bodies that unless there is a no transfer rule with no loopholes such as
Death transfer
Next of kin transfer
Corporate transfer
Any type of transfer
The fleet can NEVER reduce in size.
You see once the plate can be transferred it never goes away.
It remains … Forever!
The fleet never gets smaller

You can only transfer a plate once. eg. i sell my plate to some guy and he drops dead. cant be sold again. im nearly sure thats the way it is. vat man will know the correct ans. for he is the clever one and we are all stupid.

  3. sidewinderon 01 Feb 2013 at 3:30 am

why wud any body rent a licences for 200 ,when licences is worth 125 .?

  4. bohemian boyon 01 Feb 2013 at 8:18 am

side what you talkin bout willard ?

  5. Benon 01 Feb 2013 at 9:46 am

some proposal that plate can be willed to next of kin. again its a legal issue, as a plate is deemed to be a business asset. some asset i hear you all say.
rental market needs to be sorted rapid, thats where the rot is. too many mucs renting without being vetted. ban the rental market completely. end of.

  6. Benon 01 Feb 2013 at 9:54 am

one more point, these people renting plates dont need a tax cert as things stand, so its tax free money for them. some joke.

  7. flybyniteon 01 Feb 2013 at 2:49 pm

    Ben,
I disagree with you on a small point: people renting plates DO need a tax clearance cert. Maybe not for the taxi itself but for the PSV licence. OK, that runs 5 years and the taxi itself only one year but at least these people have been in the net, are known and registered and will need a tax cert again a few years later.
So the rot is indeed (still) in the rental market itself. Vatman in his infinite wisdom commented on the 11, 12 and 131- reg. “luxury” vehicles. My guess is that many of these are financed by the rental market. Didn’t Ebbs introduce that already some ten years ago when he bought a whole fleet of Octavias for the HP (I believe they were slightly “shop soiled” or fleet ex-rental – like Avis or Hertz – so he got them from somewhere at a good price) ? Now the rules that were intended to make sure that we don’t carry our passengers in unreliable, dangerous, clapped-out jalopies are working for him and being turned against the drivers.
Because a new entrant to the market must have a new vehicle, (s)he cannot bring in a pre-owned car, not even a relatively new one. So if they cannot get a bank loan, the multi-plate sharks with their HP are an alternative; maybe the only one.
I have always argued that a professional driver cannot afford to allow a car to go to the point where it becomes a hazard. My car, now well over 10 years old, is no longer as pristine as used to but I still keep it in good shape. I soon will replace the second-hand tyres I had to buy because some *&%@+# slashed my previous set but otherwise I have never bought other than good, new tyres. The only concession is that the cheaper ones are a bit noisier. Not less safe, the road noise is just more noticeable.
On the other hand, a few years ago my car was in maintenance and I rented a temporary replacement. The rental was 5 years old, my car 9. But the rental (a petrol) had OVER 300.000 MILES on the clock and was totally clapped-out. Electronics were also shot and it stalled from time to time and could only be re-started by removing and re-inserting the ignition key. This once happened just as I was using a gap in the traffic to cross a very busy main road. I was lucky, I could easily have been killed. But that car was well within the limits of that accursed 9-year rule. Glad that has been eased (until now).
The rental market that most dislike has two very big disadvantages:
For new entrants because they now not only get locked into the profession (no dole if they have to leave the taxi industry) but worse they are lured into an agreement that locks them into a HP arrangement and therefore in an armlock with Shitty Cabs, Jalopy Taxis or other operators. Because the HP (to the taxi company, not a bank) must be paid or they will lose the taxi.
The other danger is that unscrupulous rentals will continue to rent out taxis to unlicensed drivers. There are strong indications that some of the renters sub-rent so that the MP owner can always claim innocence.
And, if my own experience is anything to go by, they will be tempted to keep unreliable high mileage wrecks on the road.
I am in favour of transfer in some cases, e.g. in case of untimely death.
How is a widow going to support herself (and a family) on a state widow’s pension ? Even a small amount would be a great help. The work houses are a dim memory but the breadline is not !
At least I got my licence renewed before I had to get these *&@#@$!! stickers on the side !

  8. Benon 01 Feb 2013 at 3:21 pm

Fly, a renter needs a tax cert for the psv licence, but after that, they dont need it for another 5 years. they can fleece the taxman if they want to. also look at the number of people driving taxis with no psv licence. these are the ones that are illegal in the country, you can usually spot them at night, hoodies, beanies, baseball caps etc.

  9. Benon 01 Feb 2013 at 3:27 pm

have to say it again, scrap the rental market completely and that will automatically stamp out most of the illegal activity.

  10. sidewinderon 01 Feb 2013 at 4:03 pm

whats the story with portal,i cant access it online, and i rang nta and they hav’nt rang me back!should i be worried,if anybody has info wud be coolabula.

  11. Royon 01 Feb 2013 at 4:32 pm

Ben, if when the MPO’s die, their plates die with them …. guess what? their rental business dies with them too?
If you want to see an end to the rental trade ,,, support the NO transfer rule

  12. Benon 01 Feb 2013 at 5:18 pm

Roy i have always been in favour of the NO TRANSFER rule as you call it.only way we will have less taxis on the road.

  13. bohemian boyon 01 Feb 2013 at 5:49 pm

surely its time taxi drivers thought about enlisting the help of professionals with a view to setting up a proper pension fund for retirees ?

  14. bohemian boyon 01 Feb 2013 at 5:59 pm

i fully support the no transfer rule also, but its the people who are looking for it [the reps] who need to be told you dont want it. their duty is to act in accordance with the wishes of the majority of their members. its up to you,a few like minded members to call for a meeting, with item on the agenda. at that meeting you instruct the leadership to persue the policy you [hopefully] will have voted for NO TRANFER

  15. flybyniteon 02 Feb 2013 at 3:36 am

    Ben,
I was referring to a perfect world. Well, as perfect as can be. Yes, I do realise that a PSV licence lasts longer than a taxi licence. I mentioned that. But with all the administrative ballast that is imposed, why not do what has been suggested many times before: Monitor the rentals market. There should be only a very limited supply, perhaps another system. For instance only allow to rent to drivers who already own a taxi but need a temporary fix whilst they are off the road. Reduce the rental companies to maybe one or two. And force them to keep accurate records of who is renting, when and force them to check the credentials of the renters and fine them if their records are not up-to-date. Perhaps such a company could be run as a co-op, owned by bona-fide taxi drivers. Some will say that a renter can pass the vehicle on to an illegal but there should be a stiff penalty if caught. The “powers” have no problem doling out stiff penalties for minor offences. A friend of mine (not a taxi driver) bought an old jalopy. Had to go for an NCT, had the application for a tax disc filled out by the guards. He had a minor failure: a bulb in one of the tail lights was burned out so he goes to the motor factor to buy a new one before going to the motor tax office. Parking restrictions in force but he had a ticket so nay bother… except: the parking warden left a ticket on the windscreen for failure to display a valid taxi disc. A whopping fine, he appealed and got another 30 quid slapped on. The letter with the demand for more was delayed in the mail. There was a sticker on the envelop regarding the delayed delivery. He went to pay fine and increase but that was rejected because of late payment, even though he showed them the envelop with An Post delay sticker and they slapped yet another 40 quid on top of the fine. His little boy had his 9th birthday. My friend borrowed a bit of money from me because he could not buy a birthday pressie. That is the mentality of the people who now rule over us. Brutal repression, kangaroo courts, still corrupt and quite prepared to dismantle the fabric of our services like health care, special needs, education, public safety just to feed the speculators and the highest paid their money, their gambling debts, their platinum parachutes and whopping pensions. This country is going to the dogs !

  21. zedon 03 Feb 2013 at 11:29 pm

@Flyby, if your mate binned the fine, then if,and it’s a big if ,it is supposedly posted out to him,he can deny he ever got it,if it wasn’t recorded delivery there’s no proof.

I’m on 0 penalty points as a result.

  22. flybyniteon 07 Feb 2013 at 4:22 pm

    Zed,
I can only parrot what my friend told me (actually he was nearly crying, he is on the dole and looking for work). He appealed the first fine on the grounds that he had to show the car to the NCT first, had the application for the tax disc with him when he bought a bulb and was caught by the parking warden. The appeal was rejected, he had another 30 quid fine. The letter that came in the post, telling him the fine was now 90e was delivered late. An Post had put a sticker on the envelop with some waffle about “wrongly addressed”. In fact, the address was correct. He went to the motor tax office and was told that the fine was now 130euro because he was late. He had the envelop with the An Post sticker with him and showed it, he protested, no avail, had only 90e on him. The person at the counter was quite rude and told him he had to pay 140e. He did not have the money. Within 2 days he had a solicitor’s letter telling him that if he did not pay at once he could face a fine of up to 1000 euros.
I loaned him some money or his little boy would not even had a birthday present.
I remember a scene from a Laurel and Hardy film. If I remember correctly, they were in a lawyer’s office because they had inherited a fortune. On the table in front of them was a huge pile of money. But the lawyers kept taking wads of banknotes: For all kinds of expenses.
Eventually, there was only a small amount left but when they wanted to take it, the lawyers grabbed that as well: that was for taxes. They left with $5 between them.
This is what has happened in this country.
Bertie, McGreevy, Biffo and brainless took all our money, sold us out to the ECB, put the last bit in the pockets of the bankers and now have signed up for a total clear-out that will have to be paid by the common man. Even that crook Fingers was allowed to walk of with 28 (yes: twenty eight !!) million. No more money for essential services like education, health, special needs.
Eejit Neary who sat thumb-in-arse in the Central Bank watching the country being robbed blind walked off with a platinum handshake and the failed politicians have all been well taken care of.
The heroes of 1916 must all be turning in their graves !

  23. bohemian boyon 07 Feb 2013 at 6:07 pm

fly the heros of 1916, and indeed 1981 wouldnt even recognize this country now with all the foreign imports, and these foreigners, we are told, are the children of the nation. i dont think so

  32. flybyniteon 08 Feb 2013 at 6:58 am

    zed,
my pal sez thanks for your advice but he cant afford to play chicken so he went to pay. Or so he thought coz the woman behind the counter told him he was a day late. He gave her the envelop the letter came in. he thought that was clearcut because there was an An Post sticker saying clearly that the letter had been delayed. She never even reacted, just told him that the new fine now was 130e coz of the late payment and if he did not pay up within a week it would be increased again. I loaned him 100e or there would be no pressie for his son or (choice) no food on the table last week. He is now trying to find another 40 or 50 quid before the deadline. makes my blood boil.
coz of that I have no confidence in the recent “deal” that our mealy-mouthed politicians made. if the little man gets that treatment then we have no government but a band of incompetents and highway robbers. Enda is a weakling. If you hear the financial spin doctors, so called economists, they cant agree amongst themselves, my two kids (one just did intermediate last year, the other is facing an uncertain future as she will do her leaving soon) understood one thing very clearly: most of the gambling debt of the bondholders will be transferred to them. Our children will still be paying long after we all are with the Good Lord. My son said he hopes he will meet those cretins bertie, fingers, seanie or biffo and get the chance to spit them in the face.

  33. bohemian boyon 08 Feb 2013 at 8:27 am

fly im not trying to insult your mate or anything like that, but why doesnt he go to the community welfare officer? all the bloody foreigners do it

  34. Benon 08 Feb 2013 at 8:52 am

and thats got to stop also, why should they get all these handouts

  35. zedon 09 Feb 2013 at 11:00 am

For the state it was very important ,according to a source, that all the Africans at least be “persuaded” to become taxi drivers,if they were to be allowed to sign on indefinitely, they would adapt to a free life,by giving licences, earned or not, meant they would no longer be a long term burden on the state after four years,Geddit ?

  36. bohemian boyon 09 Feb 2013 at 11:16 am

the words dumping ground springs to mind
