It’s that time of the Year again

exam hall

Last night I picked up a girl from the Dawson Street rank, she’d been in Cafe En Seinne, having a few drinks to calm her nerves after doing her oral exams for her Leaving certificate (The State end of School exams)

I have a few issues with this;

  • A 17 year old needing to turn to alcholol to calm the nerves?
  • Going to Cafe en Seinne, one of Dublin’s most expensive/exclusive bars to do it!
  • The leaving certificate exam itself, is outdated it should be done on a continuous assessment process

    I agree that a 17 year old shouldn’t need to turn to alcohol but as for the Leaving Cert being ‘out of date’, what do you mean, out of date when compared with what exactly?

    third level institutes assess students continuously throughout the term rather than one exam at the end of 3 years, if a student already had a percentage of their result “in the bag” it would relieve a lot of the pressure on the end of term one

    Did she say she was 17?

    Just asking because where i did the leaving at 16 a lot of my classmates were 18/19 and were legally allowed to drink.

    If she was 18 and went in to calm the nerves and unwind i’d have no problem, i mean when she finishes school in 2 months and goes into , lets say employment, she’ll have bad days and go home and have a glass of wine or go for a pint on a friday evening with co-workers.

    Its only the school stigma but so long as she didnt have school the next day.

    Most leaving cert students have part time weekend jobs that pay for the social life,i know i did. Now i couldnt afford cafe en seine now let alone then but each to their own! 🙂

    Yeah, she was 17 and I took the job last Wednesday so she had school the next day.
    To be honest it was the “calm my nerves” comment that struck me, not a good reason for drinking IMO.
    17 year olds drink and I don’t have a problem with it really, but it should be for “happy” reasons , I hope I’m making sense??????

    Ok well ive got a couple of things to say to this:

    1. I did my leaving cert 2 years ago and for me personally they werent too stressful because I’m a relaxed person, but i do know people who were nearly having fits because they were so worked up about the exams. Although it was the biggest waste of time of my life. Biggest load of rubbish to learn off and then forget as soon as its over!

    2. College doesnt always work the way you seem to think. Some things may be partially continuous assessment but there are exams at the end of each term that determine whether you get into the next year or not. Also, for most courses only your final year result matters. By this I mean your final year result is what determines what type of degree you get, e.g. 1.1, 1.2 etc
