Girls, always be seen to make a phone call, (regardless of whether it’s a real one or not) Say you are on your way, you’re in Taxi number XXXXX and that you’ll be there in XX minutes.
Tell the driver your Bodybuilder boyfriend /husband insists you that do it!
I’ve Just copied this over from todays Evening Herald Newspaper ;
A Dublin woman was raped by her taxi driver as she was being brought home after a night out in the city.
The sex attack occured as the woman was being taken to her home in Donabate.
In a second incident, a terrified passenger fled a taxi after her driver sexually assaulted her as she was being taken to the Aisling Hotel near Heuston Station
The National Taxi Drivers Union (NTDU) has issued a warning to passengers travelling alone late at night to be careful and to take precautions.
Gardai are investigating the rape and the alleged sexual assault which are not thought to be related.
The incidents occurred within two weeks of each other and are believed to involve foreign national drivers.
In the early hours of last Monday, a woman was travelling in a taxi in the Donabate area when she was raped.
A garda spokesperson has confirmed that officers from Swords garda station are investigating “a serious sexual assault”.
The second attack took place during a journey from Dublin city centre to the Aisling Hotel near Heuston Station. The Herald understands that the woman was picked up at Connolly Station and asked to be brought to Heuston Station.
She claims that on her way to the hotel, the male driver groped her leg in a sexually aggressive manner. When the taxi driver pulled over, the woman immediately ran into the hotel and called gardai. She was said to be left in an extremely distressed state.
The man has been questioned by gardai on more than one occasion in relation to this incident but is believed to be protesting his innocence.
In light of the incidents, Ellen O’Malley-Dunlop, Chief Executive of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre (DRCC) said that, while she didn’t want all taxi drivers to be tarnished with the same brush, similar incidents have happened in the past.
President of the National Taxi Drivers’ Union (NTDU) Tommy Gorman has also warned all passengers to take precautions when using taxis, particularly when alone.
Although he cannot comment on the specific incidents, he has urged passengers to always ask for a receipt as a way of tracing their driver.
“People using taxis should be conscious of the fact that we’ve a saturated market,” he said.
Ms O’Malley-Dunlop added: “Everybody should have numbers keyed into their phones that can be called by just pressing a button.” And she urged that one of those numbers be the DRCC freephone number 1800 77 88 88.

“he has urged passengers to always ask for a receipt as a way of tracing their driver” Would this be before or after the rape? Sorry, thought it was a goofy statement!
the taxi regulator was warned that is was only a matter of time till something like this happened .by legit drivers but did nothing to properly vet newcomers into the business .maybe now she,ll close that stable door and the horse is way down the road
stuff like this makes me so f#ckin mad
i bet she dos,nt even make a statement
Well well,
We told Kathleen(taxi regulator) that there was something strange when the driver did not know where the airport was.
She made no response.
We told Kathleen that the photo on the ID was not the guy driving the car.
Still nothing.
All the older drivers had to be vetted by the local Garda. this is another thing which has gone by the roadside.
4or more drivers “sharing”the same taxi, they seem more interested in fining you for waiting outside venues which don’t have a rank, than dealing with this problem.
Remember only one guy of the five will be insured to drive the car.
Will the office of the regulator pay compensation?
All this is just waiting to happen or worse.
The sheer number of Taxis combined with the lack of enforcement makes control of the business virtually impossible……. it’s a free for all.
Part timers and free loaders don’t care about the business, as it just a means to an end and their behavior towards other taxi drivers and passengers reflect this
The government, the regulator and to a lesser extent the general public have got the Taxi service they deserve
[...] had the newspaper out and were reading about this rape incidence in Dublin, yet another excuse to be paranoid about foreigners. I learned many interesting things (and heard [...]
I believe I’d have had a similar fate to the poor woman who’d been raped by a taxi driver in June if I hadn’t left as soon as I noticed him being suspicious. Firstly, he didn’t know where I wanted to go, when the area I wanted to go to is generally well known. In the cab for about 5 minutes and he passed remarks about me looking “very sexy” and then keep kept looking around in a way that made my skin crawl. I felt phsyically ill and got out asap, and walked for the next 40 minutes. It’s terrifying, and in no way meaning to be racist, he too was a foreigner. It’s a shame, because I know there are many decent taxi drivers but I’m no longer willing to take that risk. I’d rather walk or get the bus, tbh. More needs to be done about it, taxis used to be safe but I’ve lost all trust.
that says it all
Couple of months ago I had a few english guys in the cab.
The were ranting about non nats.
One of them told me his Sister got the hand on the leg and you are very pretty treatment and a grope from a non nat.Taxi Driver.
She jumped out near her home and rang her partner ,who was a cop.
He rang the police.
20 mins.,later a cop car called to the house.
They had a report that an African guy had claimed he was racially abused by a girl who went in to this address..
The taxi driver had rang the police before her partner had.
The girl was advised to let it go.
You can’t paint everyone with the same brush but it was only a matter of time for it to happen here.
Non nationals complaining about non nationals……… odd eh?
I don’t think that aspect of the article should be central, it would be very naive for a girl to think they were safe purely because the driver is Irish, remember the vicious triple rape incident in Rathmines by a local a few years back ……
Also it would be very unfair to assume all “non nationals” are dangerous.
my friend had a similar case last nite she was the victim of a foreign national who raped her and then had the cheek to tell her he wouldn’t charge her for the fare its outrageous my friend is devasted you hear so many stories, but the state my friend was left in and im sure all other victims of these beasts are left in same or worse states is disgraceful are they even vetted before they are allowed to drive many women around the city????? we women are meant to be safer in a taxi than to walk the streets of dublin, someone in authority should make a stand against these predators before the people of dublin take them on themselves.
@cat, Raped! last night! that’s awful are the police involved?
This has been repeated to me over and over in my cab every weekend, not all non nat drivers are bad but its looking like there are alot who are. As all legit drivers know there is no way you could carry that many fares in one night regardless of traffic so it cant be just one guy doing this. Save our business save our women and save us the hassle of trying to explain. To little to late i think again. If your not sure do as the article says bt tellthe driver your doing it and why. he will not have a problem if he is real. Call home with drivers reg, plate no. and name if needs be. please keep using taxis as my kids depend on your business.
