Taxi Strike 30th March – Pictures

Roy March 30th, 2009

I stayed around after my shift to see how the strike was going and was pleasantly surprised to see a good number of cars had shown up and that the mood was light hearted.

I could once again see spirits lifted as the lads felt something was being done and have have changed my mind and decide to do my usual shift, between 8pm and 4am on the picket at St Stephens Green

Here’s some Pictures taken this morning between 4am and 5am

National Hackley and Taxi Association Poster on O’Connell Street (good to see the Unions finally get involved)

The lads on the Geen were in good form

The lads on the Dawson Street Rank were having a sit down protest!

Irish Taxi Federation Poster on Rathmines rank:

And discovered an old Mate Protesting  there ( John the taller one)

Well I don’t know if it was the strike but I left work at 6:30 (by Heuston) and there was NO traffic, it was like 9am on a Sunday morning and the same in town! Not many people around either

laineyg, it has been like that all day. I wonder if the lack of rank space and the ‘roaming’ empty taxis which are normally there, are part of the reason??. I will write a letter to kathleen Doyle. I’m sure that she could get an ‘independent’ body such as Goodbodys to do a report.
Goodbodys: the three wise monkeys, see no evil…
Those men in the photos are out there in the early morning walking up and down because their earnings have fallen by only 5% remember.

@Roy, some of the unions got involved.
Gorman was quoted in the media as saying that he did not have time to ballot his members, but he felt confident that they would not work during the strke. Yeah right, as the teenagers say. He conveniently closed down his dormant website during the week. Why? maybe because it has a ‘polling’ facility (for a ballot!!!). And this radio company owner/ union ‘rep’ has taxi driver’s interests at heart??. I would love to know what NTDU members think of comrade Tommy’s shenanigans–remember the members of NTDU also have a large share in a radio company. The NTDU members are apparently like Fianna Fail voters. They all complain but they still help to keep them in power and don’t rock the boat. I woud love to know their views on all this or are they scared of Mugabe??
Do NTDU members get a dividend from their radio company?? Tell me to mind my own business, but it smells to high heaven. A union with a leader and members who….well you get the drift.
Remember, no matter what happens in the near future this radio company owner will sit on the Taxi Advisory Council ‘representing’ taxi drivers. Yeah, Right.

its about time we taxidrivers done something with these radio companys they want us to work cheap because of the mess were in and when we try to do something about it they dont support us on strike we should all give our radios back NOW

anto, I agree with you but the real slaves are in the radio companies. God love some of them, but they have the mentality of the wage-slave. they think that the radio company owner or manager is their boss…” I won’t go on strike boss..please give me the good work boss”.
Malcolm X, when describing people of his own race who had this mentality,he called the “house N’s”. They thoght that they were a cut above the field-hands, and that the “boss”, the slave-owner favoured them more. Radio companies are just a necessary parasitical element in the industry. but mark my words, if we lose this fight KD will force us into radio companies. than they will really dictate our earnings. Please do not let my prediction be correct…Fight back and don’t allow anybody else to piss on us.
