Dealing with unlicenced Taxi drivers
Roy April 11th, 2009
Bogeys:
Drivers that don’t have some or all of the required credentials to operate a taxi.
Even though a cab may appear completey legal, with yellow daisy stickers on the front and back windscreens, NCT, Insurance and Tax certificates all in order and it’s meter/printer/roofsign all sealed and working correctly…………..
If the driver is not a licenced operator, then the cab is not insured, the driver has not been vetted and he/she may not know where they are going.
Here are some steps you can take before taking a Taxi to help esure the driver is legal:
- Approaching the Taxi:
- Ensure that the drivers ID card is clearly visible on the dashboard showing the county of issue
- Before you get in:
- Ask the driver if knows where your destination is “Goatstown, Santry, Fingals, Perrystown” for example. If the response is “no” or “you show me” or “i’ll put it in the Sat Nav”…..Don’t take the cab….. You don’t need to make any excuses, just move on.
- When in the cab:
- Check the picture on the ID card, remebering it could be up to ten years old, (crazy!) and confirm it’s your driver, ask for secondary ID if you’re unsure, by law we must carry a drivers licence, if he/she is unwilling…..leave!
Self enforcement is the only option, relying on the authorities is facile, they simply do not have the staff to cope with current taxi numbers.

The regulator and the Garda don’t care about things like this.
All they want is to catch you on double yellow lines, while ignoring all the illegal drivers across the road.
It will all change with the first murder, at least I hope that doesn’t have to happen first.
I asked the Garda why he doesn’t stop taxis at night and take out illegals?, he said he couldn’t stop every taxi being driven by a Black person. I said that there are plenty of Albanians, Russians and Romanians at it as well, not to mention the country cousins coming up at weekends.
The legals are easier to prosecute as we pay the fine.
Sometimes I feel like a mouse trying to make an elephant move.
That regulator might just step back and crush me.
I HAVE A SUBMISSION WITH THE DEP OF JUSTICE ON THIS ISSUE THEY CONTACTED ME BACK AND I SENT THEM SOME FURTHER EXPLANITORY NOTES QUOTEING THE LEGISLATION AND LEGAL REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY ESPECIALLY FOR NON EEA CITIZENS ITS PROBABLY THE FIRST THEY HEARD OF IT BUT THEY CANNOT CONTINUE TO IGNORE THE PROBLEM AS THEY HAVE BEEN ALERTED ON THE ISSUE .THE REGULATOR HAS NO IMPUT ON THIS ISSUE IT IS PURELY A MATTER OF CRIMINAL LAW AND I EXPECT A DIRECTIVE TO BE ISSUED TO THE GARDA BY THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE TO DEAL WITH THIS ILLEGAL PRACTICE VERY QUICKLY
